Genesis & GrowthGenesisTear Smoke Munitions were imported from USA and UK to our Country till 1974. In 1974 DRDO and DGOF for the first time started the production of Tear Smoke Munitions in India. In 1976 bench scaled technology of these Munitions were transferred to BSF. The TSU unit was established at Tekanpur on 12-05-1976 as project of Ministry of Home Affairs. The Plant was set up in collaboration with Director General, Ordnance Factory (DGOF) based on the technology developed by DRDO. Till then, the Police force in India was dependent on imported Tear Smoke Munitions (TSM) for riot control. Besides, being a drain on foreign exchange, there was other obvious disadvantage. GrowthIn the original Project report at the time of inception of Tear Smoke Unit it was envisaged the whole Plant would come up in a Phase manner with installed capacity 60000 munitions per year on twelve month per year basis. However, soon it would realized that an important aspect i.e., climatic conditions have not taken into consideration for fixing the installed capacity of TSU. Hence, after putting on due deliberation on the aspect the installed capacity of the unit reduced to 50000 munitions per year based on 10 months working.
As on date the installed capacity of this Unit is more than the double the capacity fixed at the inception of this Unit. Till now this Unit has developed 36 different types Tear Smoke Munitions and fulfilling the requirements of, SPOs, CPOs and Army by supplying TSMs (Tear Smoke Munitions) for maintaining the Law and Order situations.
